DOODLE GENERATIONS EXPLAINED
All doodle generations start with the letter "F". Ever wonder what this stood for? The "F" stands for Filial Hybrid, meaning that your dog is a hybrid or combination of two different dog breeds. The number afterwards is the generation number or meaning how many steps in ancestry are you away from the purebred parents. F1 means first generation. Since we breed goldendoodles, a F1 would mean a golden retriever crossed with a poodle. F2 means second generation. F3 means third generation. We'll talk more about these. Often you'll see a letter "B" after the number. This means that it was a backcross, meaning the current generation was bred back to the breed of the original parents breed. This would mean to create a F1b-- a F1 was bred to either a poodle or a goldenretriever. It is MOST desirable to breed back to a poodle. We never bred back to a golden retriever because this creates coat issues. If there are two "B"s in the name, it means that the goldendoodle was backcrossed twice with a poodle. That's the basic jest of it now let's talk more specifics.
We will use the golden retriever and poodle in all these examples however it could just as easily be a cavalier and a poodle. Its the same concept.
F1 Goldendoodle--
A F1 goldendoodle is a cross between a purebred golden retriever and a purebred poodle. Each parent passes on 50% of his and her DNA so the puppy is truly 1/2 poodle and 1/2 golden retriever. These pups are low to non shedding. Often with a shaggy/wavy coat. If you suffer from moderate to severe allergies you will want to avoid this generation. Some F1 goldendoodles shed very little and some not at all. Our F1 Starlet who is retired now is completely non-shedding.
F1b Goldendoodle--
A F1b goldendoodle is a cross between a F1 and almost always a poodle although if you did cross to a golden retriever that would technically be called a F1b as well. We only backcross back to a poodle. This generation is non-shedding and is very suitable for people with severe allergies. Puppies can be shaggy/wavy coats or have a curlier coat. The poodle parent who passes on his DNA only has poodle genes to pass on however the F1 goldendoodle parent when she passes on her DNA has a combination of poodle and golden doodle DNA to pass on. Maybe she passes on 40 poodle shares and 10 golden doodle shares in the 50% that she passes on. Do you see how its not possible to say that a F1b is 75% poodle and 25% golden retriever? The F1 parent (in this example we are saying the mom is the F1) could easily pass on 30 golden retriever shares and 20 poodle shares. Then you'd have a puppy that's 70% poodle and 30% golden retriever. You DO know for certain that if the poodle sire is a purebred poodle that he will only pass on poodle genes.
